Travel to China for Spring Festival plummets as the country struggles with coronavirus

The contagious deadly virus has subdued Lunar New Year celebrations in the ‘Land of the Dragon’, causing a decline in tourism

Coronavirus has struck China harder than it seems on surface. The outbreak of lethal virus has left the country in a state of lockdown, along with giving the tourists a scare of their lives. Also, people planning to visit the ‘Land of the Dragon’ for the Lunar New Year and Spring Festival celebrations are disappointed as the virus continues to claim lives.

Millions of people visit China during the Lunar New Year celebrations, since it’s the biggest festival in the country, and typically includes large public events. However, a large number of festivities have been cancelled this year, in a bid to prevent the virus from spreading any further.

Another dampener to the holiday spirit comes in the form of shutdown of several major places of tourist interest, such as the Shanghai Disneyland, and the Great Wall in Beijing, as well as several noted temples across the country.

“In response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak and in order to ensure the health and safety of our guests and cast, Shanghai Disney Resort is temporarily closing Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and announce the reopening date upon confirmation,” Shanghai Disney Resort posted on its website.

With 26 dead from the coronavirus so far, the country has registered thousands of new cases. The virus is no longer limited to China; several patients affected with the deadly virus have been identified in the neighbouring countries as well as in other parts of the world.

As coronavirus continues to spread across China, tourists and travel enthusiasts are refraining from planning any trip to China until the outbreak subsides. A large number of tourists have also cancelled their existing plans to participate in the Chinese New Year celebrations.
