Located on the bank of river Shipra, Kal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain, also known as temple city, is considered as one of the most sacred places in Hinduism. The temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the chief among the eight Bhairavs, the ‘guardian deity’ of the city, and that is why the keys of the temple are kept at the temple premise at night and no one is allowed to carry it elsewhere.
Every day, this 6000 years old temple attracts hundreds and thousands of devotees due to the unique and traditional tantric ritual of offering liquor as chadhava to the idol of Kal Bhairav temple in Ujjain with undying their faith in God, and it is also distributed as ‘prasad’ to the visitors of the temple. Devotees travel thousands of miles to see the awe-inspiring sight of Kal Bhairav sipping the drink.
The deity actually ‘drinks up’ a quarter of the alcohol within a couple of minutes as the priest brings liquor close to a slit forming lips. The morning ritual starts with a temple priest offering a big bottle of red wine or rum along with other puja material to the deity.
One can find all types of liquor in the shops outside the temple throughout the year. Temples also has a deep stambh and exquisite paintings in Malwa style which are considered as the most striking features.
Dog is the vehicle of the Lord Kal Bhairav – it is considered auspicious to feed the dogs which shows our respect to Kal Bhairav.
